How much do you think it costs to decorate your home? Or let’s make it easier - a room in your home?

Most people are shocked when they actually add up the cost of all the furnishings, rugs, lamps, window treatments, electronics/appliances, and so forth - and then you have the accessories, which less be honest - are JUST as important. A room without accessories feels cold and unwelcoming - almost like its been staged. I actually had a client reach out recently for help with styling her living room built-ins because she kept having people ask when they were moving!

That being said - you do NOT need to blow your budget on accessories for your space! This is an area where you can pull back a bit and save some money that can then be invested in your larger furniture pieces. The key is knowing what to look for to get a luxe look for less.

When I’m shopping for accessories for a client, the key is to keep it NEUTRAL and NATURAL. What this means is that I look for items in neutral colors and made out of natural materials - because these will also look higher end than a cheap piece that’s trying to look like a statement piece. (Side note: if you find a statement piece you LOVE - even if it is less expensive, get it! Rules are always thrown out the window if you truly love something. These are guidelines for those extra pieces that look nice but aren’t the item you’re drooling over.)

What are neutral colors? Look for items in cream, white, gray, beige, black and even sometimes navy or hunter green (if those two colors are present elsewhere in the room). Do not grab a bright yellow plastic knick-knack because you think the shelf needs a pop of color.

What are natural materials? Ceramic, glass, marble, wood and metal - items made out of these materials are always going to feel more expensive.

By the way - this is why the home goods section at Target is killing it lately - they use natural materials and neutral materials on almost all of their items! Another one of my favorite places for finding great options is HomeGoods - and you can even find some great options at your local thrift store (just keep these guidelines in mind!) Even Amazon has some killer pieces - you just have to wade through a lot of the not so great stuff.

Here are some examples of what I’m talking about:

To summarize - save money on your “filler” accessories (those that make the space feel finished but aren’t your statement pieces) by selecting those made from natural materials and with neutral finishes.
