One Room Challenge: The Pantry, Week 2

This week feels pretty short and boring, but was very important - it was demo and prep week! I packed up the contents of the pantry, which thankfully wasn’t too overwhelming since we just moved in two months ago, and removed the existing shelving. Now my kitchen and office are a bit of a disaster since I needed somewhere to put all of the contents that was still accessible, but the pantry is empty!

The next step after removing the shelving was to patch all of the holes left by the old shelves. This ended up being far more time consuming than I anticipated, mainly because every single shelf was installed with drywall anchors and not directly into studs. What this meant is that instead of having small screw holes to patch, I had LOTS of giant holes in the drywall. I started by just using patch compound, but after going through a small container and realizing I still needed at least one more coat (if not two), I went out and bought a larger batch of drywall compound to work with. This step alone took three days, mainly because of the amount of time you need to wait between coats to let the compound dry before sanding.

Now that the walls are prepped appropriately, its time to paint! That will be next week’s adventure - come back to see how I’m going to get the look of wallpaper, without the cost or hassle of installing wallpaper!
